Garden Route “Road & Rail” Safaris

SPEND FIVE LUXURIOUS DAYS between Cape Town and the Garden Route with an experienced Rail & Steam fundi – a fascinating tour (even for non-rail enthusiasts).

TAKE A TOUR of the Cape Agulhas lighthouse, the Kleinplasie open-air steam museum and an authentic, working locomotive depot. Visit Africa’s southernmost station. Savour a scenic ride on the unique Power Van up the picturesque Outeniqua Pass. Have a memorable trip on the famous Choo-Tjoe between George and Knysna - or join the photographers chasing it.

ENJOY TIME at a real ostrich ranch. Relax at Avalon Springs. Follow the train line back to Cape Town via Worcester, Wolseley, Gouda and Malmesbury station.

IDEAL for corporate and family getaways. Tours are limited to 20 people per group - so there's no overcrowding and still room for flexibility.

ARRIVE EARLY and visit our local clubs for the day:

  • Cape Town Live Steamers meet every first Saturday of the month and proudly display and operate their 1:12 working model replicas of steam engines.
  • Cape Western Vintage Railway runs the "Epping Market Choo Choo" every first Sunday of the month.

DAY 1:
• Leave Cape Town via the N2 (past the airport)
• Visit a toy museum with model trains and steamboats
• Stand on the southern tip of the African continent
• See the Cape Agulhas lighthouse
• Walk on the southernmost station in Africa
• Enjoy lunch in Swellendam
• View the Gouritz River bridges
• Savour sundowners and dinner at the Santos Express, Mossel Bay
DAY 2:
• Either visit the Voorbaai loco depot or see the Maritime museum
• Look around the Outeniqua Transport Museum
• Take a ride up the Outeniqua Pass on the Power Van (optional: ride down the pass on a bicycle)
• Enjoy time at leisure in George
• Experience a traditional South African “braai” (BBQ)

DAY 3:
This day is dedicated to the world-renown Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe. Either ride it or join the photographic party chasing it. Have two hours at leisure in Knysna. Join the group for sundowners and dinner.

DAY 4:
• Leave George over the new Outeniqua Pass
• Visit an ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn (for lunch)
• Be pampered at the hot mineral springs in Montagu

DAY 5:
• Leave the springs only at 10am (reluctantly)
• Enjoy a wine tasting in the Robertson area
• Have lunch at Kleinplasie
• Follow the railway pass near Tulbagh
• Down some ales at the Parrot’s Den
• Stop in at Swartland Cellars
• Ride across Malmesbury station
• Take a scenic ride back to Cape Town via the coast.

Bear in mind that the price INCLUDES bed and breakfast, road transport, all scheduled rides and entrances AND a wine tasting!!
